Kindle Library Checkout and Return Process
By James Moushon
(Last update: 10-09-2011)

The Checkout Process

Checkout is a simple process: Your Library to the Amazon site via Overdrive software. The following is a list of the steps of the Checkout Library Process. Some steps may vary by library because Overdrive integrates with the library’s existing Internet software.

     What is Required

1.    Valid Library Card and a PIN number. (An email address on file with the library is recommended for expiration notification. Although there are no late fees and no overdue
ebooks in the lending process, if I am in the middle of an ebook, an early warning of losing
the title is nice.)

2.    Instructions on how to access your library site and its ebook lending program. (You can only checkout an individual title for one registered device at a time unlike a purchased ebook in which you can read the same title on multiple devices.)

3.    An Amazon Account (It is Free to sign up. If you already purchase on-line through Amazon
you have one.)

       4. A Kindle device and/or a software app like Kindle for PC/MAC or other mobile
device. They must be registered on Amazon’s site to be able to process a library
checkout. To download a ‘Kindle for’ software app, click here.

The Process

1.    Sign In to Your on-line Library Account

2.    Search your library catalog for an ebook that is available in the Kindle format. To
limit your search make sure you select the ‘Kindle Book’ format and check the box,
Limit to available copies’. This will save you time browsing through the catalog for
available titles for your Kindle.

3.    Select an ebook and click the ‘Add to Book Bag’ link. There could be several different formats listing for the title so make sure you choose the ‘Kindle Book’. Notice the ‘Items in my Book Bag:’ section at the top right just changed, showing the number
of ebooks you have for check out. This is like a shopping cart when you buy on-line.
(If the ebook is already checked out, you can get on the waiting list for that ebook by clicking on ‘Place a Hold’ link for that book.

4.    a.   Click the ‘Continue Browsing’ link to add more titles to your checkout OR

     b.      Click the ‘Proceed to Checkout’ link to check out the titles in your book bag.

5.    Select lending period and click the ‘Confirm Check Out’ button. (Note ‘My Account
Notes’
section which provides information about the number of titles checked out and
the remaining number available to be checked out.) This transfers you to the ‘Download’ area of the library system.

6.    Download Area. Click the ‘Get for Kindle’ button. You will be transferred to the Amazon site section called ‘Get Your Public Library Loan’. This displays information about the title and any notes. You may be required to login to your Amazon account, if you haven’t already.

        7.    Before you click the ‘Get library book’ button, select the device you want to
‘Deliver to:’ from the dropdown list provided. This is important because you may
have several different alternatives. Only registered devices will appear in the list. For
example, you may have a Kindle device with 3G and the Kindle for PC software with
WIFI, both registered to your account. You can select one option per title borrowed.

        8.    Click ‘Get library book’ button. This will transfer you to a ‘Thanks’ page.

 9.    Amazon will present a ‘Thanks’ page with instructions to proceed. This page
recognizes which type of device (WIFI or not) from the device selected in Step 7
above and gives you the proper directions.

       10. If you’re going to deliver the ebook to a WIFI device or your computer:

a.       Click on the ‘Manage Your Kindle’ link on the ‘Thanks’ page. This will transfer you to your ‘Your Kindle Library’. Each library ebook checked out will be listed with a ‘public
library’
note attached and the date checked out. You may be required to log into Amazon,
if your are not already.

b.      Find the ebook you are downloading and click on the ‘Action’ button. The Amazon Action Options list will appear.

Amazon Action Options

Deliver to my …                            [to WIFI devices & computer software apps]
Purchase this book                        [transfer you to the Amazon buy page]
Download & transfer via USB       [save to computer and transfer to Kindle non-WIFI]
Return this book                            [returns book to library before expiration date]
Delete from library                         [deletes title from Kindle device’s library]

              c.       Click on the ‘Deliver to my…’ option. The ebook title page of the ebook will
                    appear.

 d.      Before delivering, make sure the ‘Deliver to:’ device in the dropdown list is
 correct.

 e.      Click on the ‘Deliver’ button. The ebook should now appear in the device or software library.

          11. If you’re going to download and transfer the ebook: (3G device)

a.       The ‘Thanks’ message will inform you the device selected is not WIFI compatible and
you must transfer the file via a USB cable (This is your Kindle power cable without the
wall plug.)

b.      Click on the ‘Download now’ button on the ‘Thanks’ page. A ‘Save Screen’
should appear.

c.       You will be prompted to ‘Open’ or ‘Save’. The Download and delivery page will appear.

d.      Click on ‘Save’. (Use ‘Save As’ if you want to put the ebook in a different folder.)

            e.       Find the ebook you are ‘Transferring via USB’ in its computer directory folder from
(Step ‘d’ above) and depress CTRL-C to copy the file to the clipboard.

            f.        Locate the Kindle device folder in the computer directory and its sub folder
                  ‘Documents’.

            g.       Paste (CTRL-P) the ebook into the sub folder and you should be good to go.

         12.  Returning a library Kindle ebook

Your borrowed ebook will be returned to the library automatically on its expiration
date with no late fees. Because of the limit of checkouts you can have, you may want
to return an ebook early to your public library. You can use the ‘Return this book’
action on the title in your ‘Manage Your Kindle’ on the Amazon site. This will return
the ebook, send you an email notification, recalculate the count of books you can
borrow and make the title unreadable on your device or software app.

Unfortunately it does not delete it from your device but instead gives you the
opportunity to buy the ebook from Amazon. You must perform the action ‘Delete
               from Library’
on the title in the ‘Manage Your Kindle’ on the Amazon site to
remove the title from your Kindle.

          13.  Expiration Date

You can access a list of the ebook titles you have checked out by going to your ‘My
                Account’
on your library site. Click on the ‘My Digital Bookshelf’ and a display
of all the titles borrowed will appear along with the ‘checked out on’ and ‘expires on’
                date.

You can also view the expiration date on the Amazon site by accessing the
‘Manage Your Kindle’ books listing and clicking on the ‘+’ to the left of the title.
